Reputation Barometer
Belgian Independent Law Firms

18 Belgian independent law firms. 7 dimensions. One conclusion:
the war for talent is won by firms that are visible.

Why this matters

For independent firms:
visibility is your strategic advantage.

Belgian independent firms don't compete on scale, but on specialisation, quality and talent appeal. In a market where international firms dominate, your online reputation determines whether you attract the best talent — and retain it.

Digital reputation & niche talent

Online visibility determines whether
niche talent finds its way to you.

Lawyers with specific expertise (M&A, IP, employment law) seek firms with a strong focus on their niche. They find you via Google, LinkedIn and specialised directories — not through traditional recruitment.

Selection criteria — why these 18 firms?
Every firm in this barometer meets three cumulative criteria: (1) Belgian-founded and independent (not a branch of an international firm), (2) an active presence in Belgium (Flanders, Brussels or Wallonia), and (3) a clear practice focus — specialist or full-service. This yielded 18 firms: from established full-service firms to specialised niche players in employment law, tax, IP, tech and competition law.

Managing Partner Reputation

The managing partner as
the face of the firm.

In independent firms, the managing partner is even more than in large firms the face of the firm. Personal visibility and thought leadership of the MP are direct levers for firm reputation.

"In independent firms, the MP is not just the leader — he or she IS the firm for clients and talent."

Sector insights

Four opportunities for Belgian independent firms.

Niche specialisation as a powerful lever

Van Bael & Bellis (EU/competition, 9/10 market position), Contrast (EU law) and Cresco (tech/venture) show how deep specialisation creates a strong reputation without scale. This is the DNA of Belgian independent firms — and it distinguishes you directly from international competitors.

Managing partner: the face of the firm

At independent firms, the MP is even more crucial as brand ambassador. Van Bael & Bellis and Simont Braun score 8/10 and 7/10 on MP reputation. Deprevernet's Grégoire Ryelandt (7/10) shows how personal authority in competition law strengthens the entire firm.

Digital presence: the biggest growth opportunity

Van Bael & Bellis (8/10) and Simont Braun (8/10) show what is possible in terms of digital visibility. Most firms score 5-6. This is the dimension where firms can make a large impact on talent attraction and client acquisition with relatively small investments.

Legal tech differentiation as an untapped opportunity

Quinz (8/10) and Simont Braun (7/10) lead on innovation thanks to technological investments. Most firms score 4-5. Legal tech adoption is the biggest untapped potential for independent firms to position themselves as future-proof against large international players.

Conclusion

For Belgian independent firms:
specialisation + visibility = competitive advantage.

1
Deep specialisation is your advantage. Instead of competing on scale, build reputation on your expertise niche. Ensure this niche is visible online and that the MP is recognised as an expert.
2
The managing partner is your most valuable asset for employer branding. Invest in the personal visibility of your MP through LinkedIn thought leadership, media appearances, and speaking engagements.
3
Digital presence is where independent firms close the gap with international competitors. LinkedIn, own content, and video can make you visible to exactly the talent you want to attract.
4
Innovation and legal tech are untapped potential. Even small investments in AI tools, proprietary platforms, or tech partnerships can position independent firms as forward-thinking and future-proof.
5
Every independent firm has specific growth opportunities. The firms that invest now in employer branding, MP visibility and digital strategy will attract the best niche talent — and retain it.
